I have been having loose motions for the past two days. What medicines or treatment should be taken to control it?
Loose motions for two days are commonly caused by stomach infections, contaminated food or water, viral illness, food intolerance, or indigestion. In most mild cases, the main treatment is preventing dehydration and allowing the stomach to recover. The most important step is to drink plenty of fluids such as clean water, coconut water, rice water, soups, or ORS (oral rehydration solution), as the body loses water and salts during diarrhoea. Eating light and easily digestible foods like rice, curd, bananas, toast, khichdi, apples, and boiled potatoes may help settle the stomach. It is better to avoid oily, spicy, heavy, or outside food until the motions improve. Medicines may be needed depending on the severity and cause of the loose motions. Probiotics are commonly used to restore healthy gut bacteria and may help reduce the duration of diarrhoea. Some people may also need medicines to control stomach cramps or vomiting if present. Antibiotics are not always required and should not be taken without medical advice because many cases are viral and improve on their own. Rest is also important while the body recovers. You should consult a doctor if you develop a high fever, blood in your stools, severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration such as dizziness or reduced urination, or if the loose motions continue for more than a few days. Maintaining proper hand hygiene and drinking safe water can also help prevent future stomach infections.
