Cold, runny nose, and ear pain often occur together because the nose, throat, and ears are connected internally. A common cold, viral infection, allergy, or sinus congestion can block the passage connected to the ear, causing pressure, pain, heaviness, or reduced hearing. Sometimes fluid may collect behind the ear during a cold, leading to discomfort. Most mild cases improve within a few days with rest and supportive care. Drink plenty of warm fluids, take adequate rest, avoid cold foods and drinks, and try steam inhalation to reduce nasal blockage and pressure. Gargling with warm salt water may also help if you have throat irritation. Keeping the nose clear may reduce pressure on the ears. Mild pain-relief medicine may help reduce ear pain and headache if needed. However, if the ear pain becomes severe, is associated with fever, pus or fluid discharge from the ear, hearing loss, dizziness, swelling around the ear, or if symptoms continue for more than a few days, you should consult an ENT specialist or physician. Sometimes, ear infections may need proper examination and treatment. Avoid putting oil, earbuds, or any sharp object into the ear, as this may worsen irritation or infection. Early treatment usually helps prevent complications and improve comfort faster.
