I have hypothyroidism and take Thyronorm 88 mcg as prescribed. My TSH levels are generally within the normal range, except for a brief period when the dose was reduced to 75 mcg, and my TSH increased. Over the past two years, I have lost about 9 kg and experienced general weakness. I also take Cosart 25 mg for blood pressure, which remains well controlled. In addition, I have long-standing gas formation and abdominal discomfort. My main concern is the unexplained weight loss. What should I do?
Unintentional weight loss of 9 kg over two years, along with weakness, should not be ignored, even if your hypothyroidism appears to be well controlled. Although thyroid-related issues can affect body weight, weight loss can also occur due to several other causes, such as inadequate nutrition, nutritional deficiencies, gastrointestinal disorders, malabsorption, diabetes, chronic infections, or other underlying medical conditions. Since your TSH levels have been mostly within the normal range, the weight loss may not be solely related to your thyroid condition. It is important to consult your doctor for a comprehensive evaluation to identify the underlying cause. This may include blood tests, nutritional status assessment, and evaluation of your long-standing gastrointestinal symptoms. Do not change the dose of Thyronorm or any other prescribed medication without medical advice. A proper diagnosis is essential to determine the most appropriate treatment and management plan.
