Rough and cracked palms during cold weather are usually due to dry skin, often called Xerosis, where low humidity and frequent washing strip away natural oils. The best way to treat and prevent this is to moisturise frequently with a thick cream or ointment (preferably containing glycerin, urea, or petroleum jelly), especially after washing hands and before bedtime, and to avoid harsh soaps by using mild cleansers instead. Wearing gloves while doing household work and in cold weather helps protect the skin, and drinking enough water also supports skin hydration. If cracks become painful or deep, applying a healing ointment and covering them can help with faster recovery, and in severe cases, a doctor may prescribe medicated creams.
