I have been having a dry cough in my throat. How can it be treated?

A dry cough can occur due to viral infections, throat irritation, allergies, dust exposure, pollution, acidity, smoking, or changes in weather. In many cases, it improves gradually with simple home care and avoiding triggers. Drinking plenty of warm fluids, warm water with honey (if not diabetic), herbal tea, and steam inhalation may help soothe the throat and reduce irritation. Try to avoid cold drinks, smoking, dust, strong perfumes, and polluted environments, as these can worsen the cough. Keeping the throat moist and getting enough rest may also help with recovery. If allergies are contributing to the cough, doctors may sometimes recommend anti-allergy medicines or cough syrups, depending on the symptoms. Dry cough caused by acidity may improve by avoiding spicy and oily food, eating light meals, and not lying down immediately after eating. However, if the cough lasts for more than 2-3 weeks, becomes severe, is associated with fever, breathing difficulty, wheezing, chest pain, weight loss, blood in sputum, or disturbed sleep, you should consult a doctor for proper examination and treatment. Persistent dry cough may sometimes require tests to rule out asthma, allergy, infection, or other underlying conditions. Most mild cases improve well with hydration, throat care, and treatment of the underlying cause.
