I have developed a small pimple-like swelling just above the anus. Sometimes a thick liquid discharges from it, and at other times it becomes dry. There is no pain, and this has been happening for the past year. What could this be, and what should I do?
A small pimple-like swelling near the anus that occasionally discharges thick fluid is most commonly suggestive of a fistula-in-ano (an abnormal tract between the anal canal and skin). It may not always be painful, but persistent discharge is a warning sign. It is unlikely to heal completely with ointments alone. You should consult a general surgeon for proper examination. Early treatment helps prevent complications and repeated infection. Avoid squeezing it, maintain good hygiene, and keep the area dry until you see a doctor.
