What type of rain footwear should I wear to prevent infection while my toe is still healing from surgery and I am dressing my damaged toenail bed with Betadine, chloramphenicol ointment, and gauze?
You?re taking such diligent care of your healing toe! Keeping your dressing completely dry is crucial for preventing infection. For rainy days, the best option is a wide-toed, completely waterproof boot that doesn?t squeeze or rub your toe. Alternatively, you can wear a comfortable orthopaedic shoe and cover it with a medical-grade waterproof cast protector or a secure plastic bag sealed with medical tape. Avoid tight rain boots, as pressure can disrupt the healing nail bed. If your gauze, povidone-iodine (Betadine), or chloramphenicol dressing does get damp, please change it immediately.
