A minor injury from an iron rod with slight bleeding is usually not serious, but proper wound care is important to prevent infection. Watch for signs of infection such as increasing redness, swelling, warmth, pus discharge, severe pain, or fever. A tetanus injection may be needed depending on when you last received one. If your last tetanus vaccine was more than 5-10 years ago, or if you are unsure about your vaccination status, it is safer to consult a doctor and get a tetanus booster. You should also seek medical care if the wound is deep, dirty, caused by a rusty object, continues bleeding, or if you have difficulty moving your hand or fingers. In most small injuries, proper cleaning and basic care are enough, but keeping tetanus protection updated is very important.
