What are the symptoms of ferrous sulphate tablet toxicity, and how is it treated?

Asked by Female, 28 · 1 day ago

Ferrous sulphate (iron) toxicity is a medical emergency. Early symptoms (within 1 to 6 hours) include severe abdominal pain, vomiting (sometimes with blood), diarrhoea, and dehydration. If untreated, it can lead to low blood pressure, confusion, seizures, and liver failure. Treatment requires immediate hospital care. Doctors will provide IV fluids and may perform whole bowel irrigation to flush out unabsorbed tablets. For severe poisoning, a specific antidote called deferoxamine (a chelating agent) is given intravenously to bind the excess iron and safely remove it through urine. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical help immediately.
