Genital warts on the penis are commonly caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which spreads through sexual contact. The warts may appear as small soft bumps, rough growths, or clustered lesions and can increase gradually if untreated. Some people experience itching, irritation, or discomfort, while others notice only cosmetic changes. Treatment usually focuses on removing visible warts and reducing the spread of the infection. Doctors may use prescription creams, chemical applications, cryotherapy, cauterization, laser therapy, or minor procedures depending on the size and number of warts. More than one treatment session is sometimes needed because HPV can remain in the skin even after the visible wart disappears. Keeping the area clean and dry and avoiding friction may reduce irritation during healing. Using condoms may lower transmission risk, although HPV can still spread through skin contact. Sexual partners may also need evaluation if symptoms are present. Bleeding, rapid growth, pain, or ulcers around the genital area should be checked carefully because some conditions can resemble genital warts.
