What are the causes and symptoms of acid reflux? Can acid reflux cause inflammation in the neck region?
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus due to a weakened lower oesophageal sphincter. Common causes include overeating, obesity, certain foods (such as spicy, fatty, or acidic items), smoking, and lying down after meals. Symptoms typically include heartburn, regurgitation, chest discomfort, throat irritation, and difficulty swallowing. In some cases, acid reflux can lead to inflammation in the throat or neck region, particularly if acid irritates the larynx (voice box) or surrounding tissues.
