Psoriasis is a long-term skin condition where the immune system becomes overactive and causes red, scaly, itchy patches on the skin. For mild cases, doctors usually start with medicated creams like steroid combinations, vitamin D analogues, or moisturisers to reduce scaling and itching. In moderate to severe cases, light therapy (phototherapy) or oral medicines that reduce immune activity may be used. Keeping the skin well moisturised daily is very important, as dryness can worsen itching and scaling. Avoiding scratching, reducing stress, and limiting alcohol or smoking can also help reduce flare-ups. Since psoriasis behaves differently in each person, treatment needs to be tailored by a dermatologist based on severity and body area involved, and regular follow-up is often needed to keep it under long-term control.
