My doctor has prescribed Yasmin Tablet for hirsutism. My periods are almost regular. Is it appropriate for me to take this medicine, and are there any possible long-term side effects I should be aware of?
Yasmin Tablet (Drospirenone and Ethinylestradiol) is a combined oral contraceptive pill. It is often prescribed not only for birth control but also to treat hirsutism, which is the excessive growth of facial or body hair in women caused by increased sensitivity to male hormones. Even if your periods are regular, your doctor may still prescribe it if they suspect a hormonal imbalance or want to reduce the effect of androgens (male hormones) on hair growth and skin. In such cases, it can be appropriate, but it should always be taken under medical supervision after assessing your medical history and risk factors. Most people tolerate it well, but possible long-term side effects include a small risk of blood clots, especially in smokers, older women, or those with obesity. Some people may experience headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, or mood changes. It may also slightly affect blood pressure. On the positive side, it may improve acne and reduce the risk of ovarian and womb cancer. Regular follow-up with your doctor is important while taking this medication.
