I want to avoid altitude sickness during an upcoming trek, and I do not know if I may develop it. Is there any medicine I can take to prevent altitude sickness?
Altitude sickness can occur when the body does not get enough time to adjust to high altitude. Ascend slowly, stay well hydrated, and avoid alcohol or heavy exertion during the first days of the trek. Rest if you develop a headache, dizziness, or nausea. A doctor can advise if preventive medicine, such as acetazolamide, is suitable before the trek.
